A lot of Baulkham Hills gardens were designed in the eighties and nineties and planted for a scale that has long since been passed. Our work here is usually bringing that back under control and then holding it.
Baulkham Hills sits about 28 kilometres north-west of the city in The Hills Shire, with Bidjigal Reserve along its western side. Many of its gardens were laid out when the surrounding estates were built, with mass planting and feature shrubs that were sized for a garden thirty years younger than the one standing there now.
A row of shrubs planted to screen a fence is now a two metre thick wall, and a specimen tree put in near the patio is shading the whole back of the house. Reducing that back to the garden it was meant to be is careful work, done in stages, and it is most of what we do here.
Hills blocks are generous, which means hedge runs measured in tens of metres rather than a few. None of it is difficult, but there is a great deal of it, and that is what sets how long a visit takes.
Plenty of these gardens were built in levels, with beds behind low walls. Those beds fill with growth and litter and stop draining, and once water sits behind a wall the wall becomes the next problem. Keeping them clear is cheap maintenance that avoids an expensive repair.
