Paddington courtyards at one end, harbourside gardens at the other
Woollahra council takes in some of Sydney's most established eastern-suburbs addresses, and the gardens here sit at two very different scales. At one end are the tightly packed terraces of Paddington and the Woollahra village, where a home might open onto a courtyard only a few metres across, closed in by party walls and a rear lane. At the other are the larger blocks that run down toward the water in Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Rose Bay and Point Piper, where an established garden can wrap a whole house and step down the slope. In between sit the leafy streets of Double Bay, Darling Point and Edgecliff.
That range sets the approach. A Paddington courtyard wants every centimetre made usable and private, while a harbourside block wants an established, often formal garden kept in good order over many years. Our landscaping here begins by working out where on that spectrum a property sits, then planning around the older housing, the changes in level and the close neighbours common right across the area. Gardens that suit the era of the house
A good deal of Woollahra's housing is old by Sydney standards. Paddington and Woollahra are known for their Victorian terraces with iron lacework, and the harbourside suburbs hold plenty of grand Federation and interwar homes on generous blocks. Gardens attached to houses like these tend to have a settled, deliberate look, clipped hedges, defined beds and stone or tiled paths, rather than the open lawn and shrub layout of a newer suburb.

Formal and semi-formal gardens are common through the harbourside streets, and their whole effect depends on being kept crisp. Clipped box hedges, standard roses, pleached screens and shaped topiary all look their best with regular, careful attention, and they lose their form quickly if they are left. This is steady, ongoing care rather than a one-off build.

Closer to the water the land falls away, and blocks in Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Point Piper and parts of Bellevue Hill often drop steeply from the street toward the harbour. Flat ground is limited, gardens are built up in levels, and rock is often close to the surface, so turning a slope into usable terraces, lawn or a place to sit takes proper planning of levels and drainage.

Privacy counts for just as much on these blocks, where houses sit close together and often look across or down onto one another, so screening plants and hedges are planned in from the start. Small courtyards behind the terraces
Back in the terrace streets, the outdoor space is usually a small rear courtyard reached through the house or off a narrow lane. In Paddington and Woollahra these courtyards are often boxed in by party walls, part paved already, and expected to work as a private sitting and entertaining space rather than a garden proper. In keeping with the terraces themselves, owners here want a considered, well finished result, so the quality of the floor and planting detail matters.
Courtyard work of this kind starts with getting the surface and levels right, then builds up with climbers on the walls, a narrow raised bed or two and clipped evergreens for a green, private edge. A full lawn rarely earns its place in a space this size, so turf matters far less here than on the bigger harbourside blocks. Access is tight and there is nowhere on site to stack spoil or prunings, so we fold green waste and rubbish removal into the job and keep the street and lane clear as we work.
Mature trees on the larger blocks
The bigger harbourside and inner gardens often come with large, established trees, and on a block with a view they can be the making of a garden or the very thing blocking it. Old figs, palms and camphor laurels throw heavy shade, drop litter into pools and gutters, and over the years press on roofs, walls and boundaries. Keeping them healthy and in proportion is regular work on these properties.
