A1 is based in Merrylands, right in the middle of this part of central-western Sydney, so the Auburn area is not somewhere we drive out to now and then, it is where we work week in and week out. The Cumberland suburbs sit close together on the flat inland plain, and the gardens across Auburn, Lidcombe, Granville, Merrylands and Guildford have a lot in common: compact established blocks, heavy ground underfoot and yards that families genuinely use. Knowing the area first hand means we turn up already understanding what a garden here is likely to need.

Almost all of our work here is landscaping and garden care on established homes rather than new estates, because these suburbs were built out a long time ago. Whether you are near the station in Auburn or on a quieter street in Lidcombe, the block sizes and the soil are broadly similar, so we can give you a realistic plan from the first visit.

Space is tight, so every metre has to count

The blocks across Auburn, Granville and Berala are mostly small to medium and long settled, so the main design question is usually how to fit everything you want into a limited footprint. A family here often wants a patch of lawn, somewhere paved to sit and eat, a clothesline, room for a couple of fruit trees and storage down the side, on a yard a newer outer-suburb home would think of as modest. The answer is rarely to cram it in, it is to zone the space so each part earns its place.

We plan compact gardens around how they are actually used through the week, keeping a right-sized area of lawn rather than one that swallows the yard, and using paving to make a firm sitting and drying area that does not turn to mud after rain. On a small block the hard surfaces and the planting have to work together, so we set them out at the same time.

More villas and townhouses, smaller yards to match

Alongside the older houses, this part of Sydney has steadily filled in with villas, townhouses and unit blocks, particularly around the centres of Auburn, Lidcombe, Merrylands and Granville. That has brought a lot of small courtyard gardens, shared driveways and narrow strips of ground that still deserve to look good. Owners and renters here usually want something tidy and low fuss.

For these compact courtyards we lean towards low-maintenance planting, a good depth of mulch to keep beds neat and hold moisture, and screening that gives you privacy from the neighbours without eating the whole space. A well-kept hedge along a boundary or driveway does more for privacy and street noise than another length of fence, and regular hedge trimming keeps it dense and in bounds where there is no room for it to sprawl.

Fruit trees and veggies without a big backyard

Productive gardens are part of everyday life across the Auburn and Guildford area. Plenty of local yards have a lemon or mandarin by the back step, a grapevine over the carport, herbs by the kitchen door and a few vegetables tucked along a sunny fence. What stands out here is the scale: people grow a real amount of food on compact blocks, so it comes down to using space cleverly rather than setting aside a big plot.

Flat ground and clay that holds water

The land across the Auburn area is mostly flat, so gardens here rarely have a slope to contend with. What they do have is clay-influenced soil, which is common right across western Sydney. Clay drains slowly, so after heavy rain water can sit on level ground and along fence lines instead of soaking away, and then the same ground sets hard through summer.

On a compact block there is not much room to move water around, so getting the falls right matters. We shape beds and surfaces so water runs away from the house rather than pooling against a slab or a boundary, and where a bed needs lifting clear of the wet ground a low retaining wall or raised edge tidies the levels at the same time. Clay also shifts underfoot if it is not compacted properly, so the base preparation under any paving is worth getting right the first time rather than relaying it later.

Freeing up space on a crowded block

Established gardens on small blocks often reach a point where something big has outgrown the space. An old shade tree that was fine thirty years ago can end up dropping limbs over the roof, blocking most of the light from a small yard or lifting the paving with its roots. Where careful pruning is no longer enough, that is when tree lopping or full removal starts to make sense, and on tight blocks with close neighbours it is work worth having done safely.

Auburn landscaping questions

Can you still fit a lawn, seating and a veggie patch on a small Auburn block?
Usually yes. Most yards across Auburn, Lidcombe and Granville are compact but can still do a lot once the space is zoned properly. The trick is right-sizing each part: a modest patch of lawn instead of one that fills the yard, a paved area big enough for a table, and raised beds along a sunny fence for vegetables and herbs. We set the hard surfaces and the planting out together so each gets a fair share.
We are in a townhouse with a small courtyard. Is that too small to bother with?
Not at all. A good part of our work in this area is small courtyards and villa gardens, which have become far more common as the area has built up. We focus on low-maintenance planting, neat mulched beds and screening for privacy, so a compact space stays easy to live with. Small gardens still benefit from being planned properly, arguably more than large ones, because every metre is on show.
Water pools in our yard after rain. Is that the clay?
Often it is. The Auburn area is mostly flat with clay-influenced soil underneath, so water can be slow to soak away and tends to sit on level ground or along fence lines. The usual fix is to get the surface moving water again, adjusting the falls so it drains away from the house, opening up the soil in the beds, and lifting planting areas where roots would otherwise sit wet. On a small block it is worth sorting early, because there is little room to work around it later.
Can you keep our established fruit trees when you redo the garden?
Yes, and it is a common request here. An established lemon, mandarin or stone fruit takes years to reach a good size, so we plan the garden around it rather than clearing it. On compact blocks we usually give productive trees a proper prune to keep them cropping and in shape, and only suggest removing one when it is unsafe, dead, or badly placed and shading the rest of the yard.
