Landscaping & design
Sloping, bush-fringed blocks around Castlecrag and Middle Harbour often need retaining and steps to become usable.
Gardening & maintenance
Leafy established gardens through Naremburn and Northbridge reward regular renewal to keep their mature settings looking their best.
Paving & retaining walls
On sloping sandstone sites, paving works best paired with proper drainage so paths stay sound underfoot.
Tree services
Apartment courtyards around Chatswood call for greening and screening rather than the tree work suburban blocks need.
Two very different gardens in one council area
The Willoughby council area runs across a leafy stretch of the lower north shore, and gardening here really splits two ways. In Willoughby itself, along with Naremburn, Northbridge and Castlecrag, the streets are established and heavily planted, with older homes on blocks that have carried mature trees and shrubs for decades. Closer to the Chatswood centre the picture changes to apartment living, where the outdoor space attached to a home is more often a courtyard, a podium terrace or a balcony than a traditional backyard. Suburbs such as Artarmon sit somewhere between the two.
Because of that split, we do not approach every job here the same way. Renewing a settled family garden asks for different work to greening a compact unit courtyard. When we quote full landscaping projects across the area we start by looking at what the site already has, how much shade the existing canopy throws and how you actually want to use the space.
Bush fringed slopes around Castlecrag and Middle Harbour
On the harbour side of the LGA the land falls away towards Middle Harbour, and around Castlecrag and neighbouring pockets like Castle Cove and Middle Cove the blocks are steep and sit right up against the bush. Sandstone is close to the surface across much of the lower north shore, so digging often means meeting rock shelves and shallow soil, and level changes are usually better worked with than removed. Gardens here tend to suit a more natural, informal planting style that sits comfortably next to the surrounding bushland.
On a block like this the usable garden is generally something you build. Retaining walls and steps turn a slope into level terraces, and paved paths and landings give safe footing between them. Because water runs off a slope quickly, we set the levels and falls so it drains away from the house and terraces rather than pooling, and we step walls and paths around any sandstone rather than trying to cut it out.
Greening a Chatswood courtyard, terrace or balcony
Around the Chatswood centre a large share of homes are apartments, and the outdoor space is compact and often paved or tiled from the start. The challenge is usually not size but making a small area feel green and private without crowding it. Screening plants, raised beds and a few well chosen pots do most of the work, and a layer of mulch helps beds and containers hold moisture through summer, when a courtyard can get hot and dry.
Where there is a small patch of open ground or a podium lawn, we can advise on whether new turf is worth it or whether a low maintenance planted scheme suits the spot better. We look after gardens right through Chatswood and the surrounding unit blocks, working in with building access and lift bookings where they apply.
Keeping mature trees and hedges in check
The tree cover that makes Willoughby, Naremburn and Northbridge so green is also what most often needs attention. Established gums, figs and other large trees grow close to houses on the older blocks, and over time they need thinning, lifting or shaping to keep light in the garden and limbs clear of roofs and lines. Regular pruning and trimming handles most of that, and where a tree is dead, unsafe or genuinely in the wrong place we also carry out tree removal.
Leaf fall, upkeep and clearing the green waste
One thing a heavily planted area gives you is a lot of leaf litter. The mature canopy across Willoughby, Naremburn and Northbridge drops steadily through the year, gutters and beds fill up, and the shaded ground under big trees is where weeds tend to take hold. Staying on top of that is mostly a matter of regular visits, and ongoing weeding keeps borders clean and stops unwanted growth spreading towards the bushland edges.
The other half of upkeep is getting the waste off site. Prunings, clippings, cleared beds and raked leaves add up quickly, and on the narrower older blocks there is nowhere to stockpile it. When we finish a clean up or a garden strip out around Willoughby we take the green waste and rubbish with us, so you are not left with piles to shift by hand.
