The lower north shore is defined by its topography. Across North Sydney the land tips toward Sydney Harbour, and Hawkesbury sandstone sits close to the surface or breaks through it as shelves, ledges and outcrops. In harbourside pockets like Kirribilli, McMahons Point, Lavender Bay, Cremorne Point and Kurraba Point, many blocks fall away sharply from the street toward the water, so the first task on many blocks is cutting a level, usable pad into the slope.

That sandstone base changes how a garden gets built. Digging is often cutting into rock rather than turning over soil, and the position of steps and paths is set as much by the stone as by the plan. Holding the slope with retaining, steps and terraces

On a block that falls toward the harbour, holding the slope is the backbone of the whole job. Terracing the fall into level areas usually means building retaining walls, then tying those levels together with sandstone steps and landings you can actually walk down. Where sandstone shelves run through a site, we work with them, stepping walls and paths around the rock rather than fighting it.

On a fall like this, drainage and levels matter far more than they would on flat ground. Water finds the low point fast, so wall drainage, cut and fill and the path routes all get set out together rather than bolted on later. Around suburbs such as Waverton and Wollstonecraft, where the streets climb and dip toward the water, this kind of terracing is often what makes a steep back garden usable.

Courtyards and balconies near the North Sydney centres

Closer to the North Sydney, Crows Nest and St Leonards centres, the outdoor space that comes with a home is more likely to be a balcony or a compact courtyard than a back lawn. These spaces are small and private, often tucked behind an apartment block or between close neighbours, and many carry a glimpse of the harbour or the city skyline worth planning around. Getting the floor surface and levels right is what makes a courtyard this size genuinely usable.

Plenty of the lower north shore's blocks have gardens that have been in place for decades, with mature trees, established hedges and screening built up over many years. On these sites the ongoing work is less about starting from scratch and more about keeping things healthy, keeping light coming in, and protecting the outlook that makes the block what it is. Growth that has crept over a roof, a path or a harbour view is the usual reason owners call.

With sandstone close to the surface, soil on many lower north shore blocks is shallow and sits over rock, and neighbouring buildings and mature trees throw a good deal of shade. Both things narrow the sensible plant list. In beds we usually build the soil up with organic matter so plants have something to root into and hold moisture, and a solid layer of mulch helps a shallow bed cope through hot, dry spells. Lawns tend to be modest on steep blocks, and on a lot of harbourside sites there simply is not the flat ground for much turf. Our block drops steeply toward the water. Can you turn that into usable garden?
We terrace it. Each level sits behind a retaining wall, with sandstone or paved treads stepping you down between them so the drop is safe underfoot. On the lower north shore that often means working around rock shelves and ledges rather than digging through open soil, so we set out the levels, drainage and access together before starting. A fall that was only good for a view ends up as flat areas you can plant, pave and sit on.
Our place sits below the street with only stair access. Is that a problem?
Yes. Homes reached by long harbour steps, a right of way or a shared apartment entry are part of everyday work here, and where nothing larger fits we switch to a mini machine or hand tools and move materials along that same route. We price the job around the access we can see on the day, and we cart the old material and green waste off rather than parking it on a narrow site or in a shared driveway.
What works in a small courtyard or balcony behind an apartment near Crows Nest?
In a compact courtyard the floor surface and privacy usually matter most, so we often start with paving and add screening plants or a clipped hedge to green the boundary without losing floor space. On balconies we lean on lighter planting in pots rather than heavy beds, and keep bigger containers where the structure can take them.
