Across acreage and country-town gardens, hot south-west summers shape what planting will genuinely thrive.

Paving & retaining walls

Large rural-residential properties suit generous paved areas, driveways and outdoor spaces built for acreage living.

Tree services

Open, exposed estate blocks benefit from new tree planting for shade, shelter and screening.

Getting a garden established on Camden's new estate blocks

Camden has become one of Sydney's fastest-growing areas, and much of that growth sits in master-planned estates at Oran Park, Gregory Hills, Spring Farm, Gledswood Hills, Catherine Field and Currans Hill. Blocks in these estates are usually handed over as bare, compacted ground with builder's fill and little useful topsoil, so a garden has to be created from scratch rather than tidied up. Many estates also ask owners to establish a front garden within a set period, so it is worth checking your own estate's landscaping guidelines before you start.

On an estate block the front and the back tend to call for different things. The street frontage is usually about a tidy, established look reasonably quickly, which is where preparing the ground properly and laying fresh turf makes the biggest difference. The rear is the family space, so beds, edging, a paved sitting area and some screening are better planned together than added piece by piece. We set the whole landscaping build up so it can be staged to suit a budget, with the groundwork and lawn first and planting following later. Our Oran Park and Gregory Hills pages cover those estates more closely.

Acreage and rural-residential blocks at Cobbitty, Ellis Lane and Camden South

Away from the estates, a large part of the Camden area is genuine acreage and rural-residential land. Around Cobbitty, Ellis Lane, Camden South, Grasmere and Kirkham the blocks are measured in acres rather than square metres, and they bring a different set of jobs. Long driveways need edging, big open runs of lawn have to be established and kept, and there is far more ground to shape and drain than on a suburban lot. Most owners want a defined, usable garden close to the house, with the rest of the block left as open paddock or low-upkeep planting.

Bigger blocks also produce far more material to deal with. Clearing an overgrown rural yard, taking out old fill or shifting piles of green waste is often the first step, which is where our site clearing and green waste removal comes in before anything is built. From there the work is usually large-scale turf laying, boundary and windbreak planting, and, where the ground falls away, retaining walls to carve out level, usable areas near the home. Established rural trees often need attention too, and we handle everything from routine work up to full tree lopping where a large tree has become a hazard.

Acreage and rural-residential landscaping in Camden

Open, exposed sites and the south-west's hot, dry summers

The semi-rural parts of Camden are open country, and that openness shapes what grows well. Without the shelter of established suburban trees, many blocks catch a lot of sun and wind, the ground dries out faster, and young plants and new lawn come under real stress through a hot south-west summer. The soil across much of the area is heavy clay, which bakes hard and cracks when it is dry and holds water in the low spots after rain, so it needs opening up and improving before anything goes in.

The practical answer is to build in shelter and hold moisture. That means shaping and improving the soil rather than planting into raw clay, using a generous layer of mulch to keep roots cool and cut watering, and choosing hardy, heat-tolerant species that cope with full sun. On exposed boundaries a line of screening or windbreak planting makes a garden far more comfortable to sit in, and keeping those screens in shape with regular hedge trimming stops them taking over. Staying on top of weeds matters more on open ground too, where seeds blow in freely and bare soil is quick to be colonised.

Renewing the established gardens around Camden and Elderslie

Camden itself is an old country town, and the gardens in and around the town centre, Elderslie, Camden South and the leafier pockets of Kirkham and Grasmere are a world away from a bare estate block. These are settled gardens, often on larger older lots, with mature trees, established hedges and decades-old lawns. The work here is renewal rather than starting over: keeping the mature, leafy character while making the garden practical again.

Typical jobs are lifting and thinning overgrown canopies with tree pruning and trimming so light gets back to the lawn, bringing long hedges and screens back into line, relaying tired paving and paths that have shifted, and re-turfing the worn, shaded patches. Once a garden is back in shape, keeping it that way through the growing season is straightforward, and our regular Camden garden maintenance handles the ongoing mowing, pruning and tidying so the established look holds.

From estate courtyards to multi-acre blocks: how we plan the work

Because Camden covers everything from compact estate courtyards to multi-acre rural blocks, we do not price the work to a set template. On a new estate lot the conversation is about establishment and order: soil, levels, lawn and a sensible sequence so you are not paying to redo groundwork later. On an acreage block it is about scale and access, along with which parts of the property are worth turning into garden and which are better left simple. On an older town garden it is about deciding what stays, what is renewed and what comes out.

Every quote is a free, fixed-price visit to your property, so the price reflects your actual block rather than an average, and we can stage a larger project over time. We work right across the Camden area and the wider Macarthur region seven days a week, for both homes and commercial sites, including the business and industrial premises around Smeaton Grange and Narellan. If you are weighing up a full landscaping build against staged improvements, we will give you an honest view of what your site actually needs.

Local questions

Camden landscaping questions

We have just taken handover of a block at Oran Park or Gregory Hills. Where do we start?
Start with the ground rather than the plants. Estate blocks are usually handed over as compacted fill with little real topsoil, so the first steps are clearing any leftover builder's rubble, bringing in and preparing proper soil, and setting the levels so water drains away from the house. From there we lay turf and set out the beds and any paving. It is also worth checking your estate's own landscaping guidelines early, since many estates expect the front garden to be established within a set time after you move in.
Do you landscape acreage and rural-residential blocks around Cobbitty and Ellis Lane?
Yes, a good share of our Camden work is on larger rural-residential and acreage blocks rather than estate lots. Those jobs tend to involve driveway edges, big runs of lawn, boundary screening and windbreaks, and a lot more ground to shape and drain. Bigger sites usually need clearing and green waste removal first, and where the ground slopes we build retaining to create level, usable areas near the house while leaving the rest of the block simple to maintain.
Our block is open and windy with very little shade. What helps?
Open sites lose moisture quickly and can be hard on young plants, so the aim is to build in shelter and hold water in the soil. That means improving the soil before planting, mulching well to keep roots cool and cut watering, choosing hardy species that handle full sun, and putting in screening or windbreak planting along the exposed boundaries. Over a season or two that shelter makes the whole garden easier to establish and far more comfortable to use.
What can be done about the heavy clay and hot summers here?
Quite a lot, as long as the soil is prepared rather than planted into raw. Depending on the block we break up compaction, improve beds with organic matter and gypsum, mound or raise beds so roots are not sitting in wet clay, and shape the surface so water runs clear of the house. Matching the lawn and plants to hot, full-sun conditions and mulching to hold moisture through summer does the rest.
Can an established garden around Camden or Elderslie be renewed instead of cleared?
Usually, yes. Older gardens in and around the town often have good bones already, mature trees and real structure, so the job is to bring them back rather than start again. That typically means thinning or lifting tree canopies that are shading out the lawn, cutting overgrown hedges back into shape, refreshing tired paving and re-turfing the worn patches. Keeping the mature planting is what gives these gardens their settled, country-town feel.
