Two kinds of Georges River garden, side by side
The St George area sits between the Georges River and Botany Bay in southern Sydney, and its gardens fall into two camps that often share a street. On one side are the long established homes of Penshurst, Mortdale, Beverly Hills and Kingsgrove, where interwar and postwar brick houses come with proper backyards, mature trees and decades of growth. On the other are the apartments and townhouses that have gone up quickly around the Hurstville and Kogarah centres, where the outdoor space is a balcony, a small courtyard or a shared strata garden.
That split shapes how we work across the Georges River area. A settled garden on a full block wants renewal and steady upkeep, while a new courtyard near a station wants a private, low-maintenance space on a smaller footprint. Our landscaping here starts by reading which of the two a property is, then planning around the clay soils, slopes and close neighbours common through these suburbs. Gardening on the area's heavy clay soils
Clay-influenced soils are common across much of the St George area, and they behave nothing like the sandy ground closer to the coast. Clay holds water and drains slowly, so beds stay heavy and wet after rain, then set hard and crack as they dry over summer. Plants that dislike wet feet struggle in it, and a lawn laid straight onto compacted clay sits soggy through winter and bakes by January.
The answer is to work with the soil rather than against it. We break up and improve heavy ground with gypsum and organic matter, raise beds where drainage is poor, and lean on plants that tolerate clay. A generous layer of mulch stops the surface cracking, holds moisture through the dry months and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Where owners want a lawn, we prepare the base before laying turf, since turf dropped onto bare clay is the usual reason a new lawn fails here.
Blocks that fall away toward the river
Along the western and southern edge of the area the land drops toward the Georges River, and the riverside streets feel it. Blocks in Oatley, Lugarno, Connells Point, Blakehurst, Kyle Bay and Carss Park often sit above or below the road, so flat space is limited and much of the garden is on a grade. Turning that fall into level lawn, a terrace or a spot to sit is a common job on this side of the LGA.
On a sloping block over clay, levels and drainage have to be planned together, because water sheets across the surface and clay holds what it cannot shed. We build retaining walls to hold back soil and cut flat terraces into the slope, then set the falls so runoff is guided down the block rather than pooling against the house. Well laid paving, paths and steps link the levels and make a steep garden usable. Sloping riverside gardens around Oatley are typical of this work.
Established gardens and the trees that outgrow them
Back from the river, the flatter, higher suburbs are settled and leafy, and many gardens there were laid out a generation or two ago. In streets around Penshurst, Mortdale, Narwee, Riverwood and Peakhurst you find real backyards with tired beds, overgrown shrubs and large trees that have outgrown the block or now crowd the house.
Privacy and screening as the suburbs build up
One thing that sets the Georges River suburbs apart right now is how often a settled house ends up next to something much taller. As unit blocks and townhouses replace older houses near the Hurstville, Kogarah, Allawah and Penshurst centres, owners of the homes around them find a new multi-storey wall of windows looking into a garden that used to be private. Screening it back is a common request in these pockets.
A well chosen screen does the job without swallowing the yard. Fast, dense evergreens such as lilly pilly, viburnum and murraya give height and cover, and keeping them sharp is ongoing work, so many owners have us back for scheduled hedge trimming rather than letting a screen grow leggy. On tighter blocks we pair a slim hedge with a raised planter or a section of screen so privacy does not cost the whole garden. Homes in Beverly Hills and the streets near the stations see plenty of this.

The other side of the area's growth is the gardens that come with the new homes.
