The Inner West is one of Sydney's oldest residential rings, and its housing shows it. Streets through Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Petersham and Balmain are lined with Victorian and Federation terraces, semis and workers' cottages, most on small, narrow lots. The garden that comes with a place like this is rarely a sprawling backyard. More often it is a compact rear courtyard, a long thin strip behind the house, or a slim side run between the wall and the boundary fence.

That shapes what people ask for. On a tight terrace block the priority is a private, usable, low-maintenance space rather than a big lawn to mow. Paving a courtyard that has to earn its keep

On a small terrace block, paving usually does more of the work than lawn. A well-laid courtyard gives you a clean, low-maintenance floor to sit and eat on, and a surface that stays tidy year round without mowing. Narrow side paths and the strip along a boundary are often paved too, so the whole ground plane is usable. Getting the falls right matters in these enclosed spaces, because water has to be led away from the house instead of pooling against an old wall.

Because materials come in by hand, smaller-format pavers and manageable loads often suit these sites better than oversized slabs. You can't fit a truck or bobcat down our side passage. Can you still do the work?
Yes, this is normal for the Inner West and we plan for it. On terraces and cottages with no driveway, we bring materials in by hand and barrow through the side passage, the house or a rear lane, and take green waste out the same way. Machinery often will not fit, so we scale the materials and method to the access and protect floors and walls where we carry through the house. Tight access rarely stops a job, it just changes how we approach it.
What works best in a small courtyard behind a Newtown or Marrickville terrace?
On a compact, often shaded courtyard, a paved floor with pots, climbers and a narrow bed usually beats trying to keep a small lawn alive. Paving gives you a usable, low-maintenance space, screening plants or a clipped hedge add privacy from neighbouring windows, and climbers green up the walls without taking floor space. The right mix depends on how much sun the courtyard actually gets, which we check on site.
A big street tree or a neighbour's tree shades my yard and drops leaves. What can be done?

Is a lawn worth having on a small terrace block?
Sometimes, but often not. On a tight, shaded block a small lawn can be more upkeep than it is worth, and paving with planted borders gives you a usable space with far less work. Where a cottage has a bit more open ground and reasonable light, a tough buffalo lawn can still suit, since it copes with the dappled shade from street trees better than fine-leaf grasses.
