What we do

Our services across Northern Beaches

One insured team for landscaping, gardening, paving and tree work in Northern Beaches. Each card links to the full service page for the detail.

Landscaping & design

Where blocks drop steeply to the sand, as at Freshwater and Newport, we level, retain and terrace.

Gardening & maintenance

Coastal gardens near Manly cop constant onshore salt wind, making frequent feeding, trimming and mulching essential.

Paving & retaining walls

Sandy ground and sea spray shape how we lay stable paving, steps and driveways on these coastal slopes.

Tree services

Inland at Belrose and Frenchs Forest, bushland gardens need canopy thinning, safe removals and green-waste disposal.

Ocean-facing blocks from Manly to Palm Beach

The Northern Beaches run for roughly thirty kilometres of coastline, from Manly in the south up the peninsula to Palm Beach, and a great deal of that land tilts towards the water. On the ocean side, blocks at Freshwater, Curl Curl, Collaroy, Newport and Avalon Beach often step down steeply from the street towards the sand, a headland or a lagoon, so the first job on many sites is simply making level, usable ground. That usually means terracing the fall with retaining walls, then linking the new levels with steps and paved landings so the garden is safe to move through.

Getting the levels and drainage right early matters more here than on a flat block. Water runs downhill fast on a steep site, so cut and fill, wall drainage and the position of paths all need to be planned together rather than added later. We look at the whole slope before pricing any one part of it. For a broader idea of what we do across the peninsula, see our landscaping services.

Sandy soil and salt off the water

Close to the beaches, the ground is often sand rather than soil. Around the back beach flats near Collaroy, Narrabeen and Dee Why, gardens sit on free draining sand that lets water and nutrients wash straight through, so new planting there frequently needs the soil built up with organic matter and kept covered. A good layer of mulch holds moisture in the root zone and takes some of the sting out of hot, windy days.

The other constant is salt. Onshore winds off the ocean, and the strong summer nor'easters, carry spray well back from the water and can burn tender foliage. Hardy, salt tolerant coastal species tend to earn their place in an exposed front garden, while more delicate plants do better tucked behind a wall, a fence or a clipped hedge. Choosing the right plant for the right position is much of what keeps a beachside garden looking healthy.

Access, stairs and getting materials in

A lot of the practical difficulty on the Northern Beaches is not the design, it is getting to the work. Streets close to the water at places like Manly, Freshwater and Whale Beach can be narrow and short on parking, and many homes sit well below or above the road with a long flight of stairs in between. That changes how a job runs: soil, pavers, turf and walling material often have to be barrowed or carried in by hand, and old material and green waste carried back out the same way.

We work this out before we start so the quote reflects the real site, not an easy one. Where a bobcat or larger machine cannot reach, we plan for smaller equipment and more labour, and we handle the rubbish and green waste removal so you are not left with piles to shift on a tight block. Honest access planning is the difference between a smooth job and a stalled one on this kind of terrain.

Terraces and paving for outdoor living

Outdoor living is a big part of how people use their homes up here, and on a sloping coastal block the usable entertaining space usually has to be built rather than found. Cutting a level terrace into the fall and finishing it in stone or pavers turns an awkward slope into a spot you can actually put a table on. We match the paving to the setting, whether that is a sheltered courtyard behind the house or an open area angled to catch afternoon sun.

Lawns that cope with sand and sun

Lawns take a beating on a beachside block. Free draining sand dries out quickly, full coastal sun is relentless in summer, and the salt in the air does the grass no favours, so a lawn that thrives in a sheltered inland yard can struggle a few streets from the surf. Warm season grasses such as buffalo and couch generally handle sandy, sunny, exposed conditions better than cool season types, and they recover well from the wear that comes with kids, dogs and constant outdoor use.

The groundwork matters as much as the grass. On pure sand we improve and level the base before laying, so the turf has something to hold moisture and root into rather than sitting on a strip that dries out by lunchtime. Our turf laying covers supply, preparation and laying across the peninsula, from Freshwater to the Pittwater suburbs.

Bushland-edge gardens on the inland side

Not all of the Northern Beaches is beachfront. Inland, suburbs like Belrose, Frenchs Forest, Davidson, Terrey Hills and Duffys Forest sit against the bushland, and gardens there behave quite differently from the sandy blocks by the water. The ground tends to be heavier or rockier, the tree cover is taller and more established, and shade and leaf litter from surrounding gums are part of daily life. Planting choices lean towards species that suit dappled light and cope with competition from established roots.

Trees are the main ongoing job on these blocks. Keeping gums and angophoras pruned back from roofs, gutters and lines improves light and keeps things tidy, and many owners on the bushland edge prefer to keep growth around the house managed. We can handle pruning and trimming, or full tree removal where a tree is in the wrong place, and clear the debris afterwards.

Local questions

Northern Beaches landscaping questions

What kind of plants cope best in an exposed garden near the beach?
In the front line of an ocean-facing block, salt spray and wind do the most damage, so hardy salt tolerant coastal plants generally hold up best, while softer species do better behind a wall, fence or hedge for shelter. Because the soil near the beach is often sand, we usually improve it with organic matter and mulch so plants can hold moisture and get established. The right choice depends on how exposed your particular spot is.
How do you make a usable garden on a steep block that falls towards the beach?
The usual approach is to terrace the slope, holding each level with retaining walls and connecting them with steps and paved landings so the space is safe and easy to use. Getting drainage and wall design right on a steep, sandy site matters, so we plan the levels, drainage and access together before starting rather than one piece at a time. It turns a slope you cannot really use into flat, functional areas.
Can you still do the work if our block has lots of stairs and no easy access?
Yes. Tight, stepped sites are common close to the water, and where a machine cannot reach we plan for smaller equipment and for barrowing materials in and out by hand. We factor the real access into the quote so there are no surprises on the day, and we take the old material and green waste away rather than leaving it on a cramped block.
Are gardens inland at Belrose or Frenchs Forest different to the beachside suburbs?
They tend to be. The bushland-edge suburbs usually have heavier or rockier ground, more established trees and more shade than the free draining sand near the beach, so planting and maintenance are approached differently. Tree work, such as pruning growth back from the house, is a bigger part of the job inland. We adjust the plan to suit whichever part of the peninsula you are on.
Why does our lawn struggle in the sandy soil near the coast?
Sand drains very fast and holds little moisture or nutrient, and combined with full coastal sun and salt in the air that makes for hard conditions on a lawn. Warm season grasses such as buffalo and couch generally cope better than cool season types, and improving and levelling the base before laying makes a big difference to how well turf establishes. Regular watering and feeding while it settles in also help.
Do you provide quotes across the whole Northern Beaches?
Yes, we cover the peninsula from Manly and the Balgowlah area up through the beaches to Palm Beach, as well as the inland bushland-edge suburbs. Quotes are free, fixed price and based on an on-site look, so the price reflects your block, its slope and its access. You can reach us seven days a week on 0451 267 287.
