Our services across Sutherland Shire
One insured team for landscaping, gardening, paving and tree work in Sutherland Shire. Each card links to the full service page for the detail.
Landscaping & design
Much of the Shire sits on sandstone, so we terrace slopes with retaining and rock work when planting.
Gardening & maintenance
Mature leafy gardens across Sylvania and Gymea stay tidy with regular hedging, weeding and mulching under established canopies.
Paving & retaining walls
Coastal paving near Cronulla contends with salt-laden wind and sandy ground, demanding durable bases and finishes.
Tree services
Bushfire-edge streets near the Royal National Park benefit from careful pruning, selective tree removal and green-waste clearing.
Gardens built on Sutherland Shire sandstone
Almost every garden in the Sutherland Shire sits on Hawkesbury sandstone, and the rock shapes what you can do with a block. Topsoil is often shallow, ledges and boulders sit close to the surface, and the land tends to fall away from the street toward bushland or water. That affects how a garden is built as much as what gets planted in it.
In practice it means digging can involve working around or cutting into rock, garden beds frequently need building up with imported soil and organic matter, and drainage has to be planned from the start because water runs off sandstone quickly instead of soaking in. Our landscaping work here starts with reading the block: where the rock sits, how the ground falls, and where water goes when it rains.
Retaining walls and terracing on sloping blocks
A lot of Shire blocks are steep and elevated. Around Como, Oyster Bay, Yowie Bay, Bangor, Alfords Point and Woronora Heights, homes step up or down the slope to catch a view, and usable flat space is usually the thing owners want most. Terracing a slope turns an awkward drop into level lawn, garden beds or somewhere to sit and entertain.
On sandstone, retaining walls have to deal with rock and fast runoff as well as holding back soil, so levels and drainage get planned together. We set the falls so water is directed down the block in a controlled way rather than pooling against the house. Steep, view-facing streets like those around Como are typical of the terracing work we do across the Shire.

Living on the bushland edge near the Royal National Park
Much of the Shire meets bush, whether it is the Royal National Park to the south, the Georges River reserves, or the pockets of remnant bushland that thread through streets in Menai, Bangor, Grays Point, Heathcote, Engadine, Loftus and Yarrawarrah. Backing onto bush is one of the area's best features and also its steadiest maintenance job, because gums keep dropping leaves, bark and limbs.
Trees near the house often need pruning and trimming to keep light, clearance and a clean edge between garden and bush, and occasionally a dead or unsafe tree calls for removal. We clear the green waste afterwards and work in line with the Biosecurity Act 2015 so weeds and pathogens are not carried between sites. Removing an established tree commonly needs council approval across Sydney, so it is worth confirming what applies before any removal, and we can handle the pruning and tidy-ups in the meantime. Bush-edge suburbs such as Menai see this kind of work all year round.
Gardens along Port Hacking and the Georges River
Water is never far away in the Shire. Port Hacking wraps the southern suburbs and the Georges River runs down the western side, so gardens in Yowie Bay, Gymea Bay, Burraneer, Dolans Bay, Lilli Pilli, Sylvania Waters, Illawong and Alfords Point often sit on blocks that slope toward the water. These gardens reward privacy screening, framed views and planting that suits a sheltered, moist aspect down near the shoreline.
Free-draining sandstone higher up the block means moisture is easily lost, so mulching beds helps hold water and keep roots cool through summer, while lower, damper ground needs drainage so it does not stay soggy after rain. On a sloping waterside block, getting water to move the way you want is half the job.
The coastal corner: Cronulla, Woolooware and Kurnell
The Shire has a genuine coastal edge where Port Hacking meets the sea, around Cronulla, Woolooware, Burraneer, Greenhills Beach and out along the peninsula to Kurnell. Here the sandstone gives way to sandier soil and salt-laden wind coming off the water, and blocks tend to be flatter and more exposed than the elevated streets inland.
That exposure changes the planting. Salt-tolerant, wind-hardy species and ground covers that bind sandy soil hold up far better than soft, thirsty plants, and lawns on free-draining sand need the right turf and feeding to stay green. Coastal gardens around Cronulla are a different job again from the bush-edge and sandstone blocks that make up most of the Shire.
Renewing established gardens in the Shire's leafy suburbs
Away from the water and the bush, much of the Shire is settled, leafy suburbia. In Sylvania, Caringbah, Miranda, Gymea, Kirrawee, Jannali, Kareela and Sutherland itself, plenty of gardens were laid out decades ago and are ready for a refresh. The common jobs are reworking tired beds, replacing overgrown shrubs and opening the space back up.
