Do you need council approval to prune a tree in Sydney?
Most Sydney councils control tree work, so the first question on any job is whether yours needs approval. As a general position across NSW, councils regulate the removal and the heavy pruning of trees over a certain height or trunk size through their local tree or vegetation provisions, while light pruning of small amounts of live growth is often exempt. The thresholds and the exemptions differ from council to council, so the only reliable answer is your own council’s.
A1 prunes and trims trees across Sydney, including shaping, crown thinning, deadwood removal and fruit tree pruning, and we lop trees where that is the right call. We will tell you at the on-site visit whether your job looks likely to need council approval before anything is cut.
To be clear about what we do not do: we do not lodge development applications and we do not issue arborist reports. If your council requires either for your tree, you will need a consulting arborist, and we will tell you that rather than start work.
When to prune and when to call us
You can manage light seasonal pruning when branches are small, accessible from the ground and clear of hazards. Check your tree’s needs, local council requirements and our guide to when to prune trees in each season before starting.
Work involving height, large limbs or branches near structures needs an appropriately equipped crew. Keep clear of power lines and seek advice about specialist clearance. Consider the green waste volume too: pruning can leave more branches than you can safely handle or dispose of yourself.

Timing matters and it varies by species. Many trees are best pruned in the cooler months, while some flowering trees are better done just after they flower. We will advise the right timing for your trees so pruning helps rather than sets them back.

I had to completely refurbish my apartment veranda. A lot of work repotting 15 huge troughs and pots and I was quite particular about the soil I wanted.
