Landscaping Ryde
From leafy riverside blocks at Gladesville, Putney and East Ryde to compact courtyards around Macquarie Park and Meadowbank, we plan, build and maintain gardens across the City of Ryde. Local landscaping shaped by slopes to the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers and a sandstone and clay mix.

Landscaping & design
Blocks sloping toward the rivers make levels and drainage central to good landscaping here.
Gardening & maintenance
Established leafy gardens often need renewal, while newer apartments call for simple, low-maintenance planting.
Paving & retaining walls
On riverside slopes, paving and retaining help create level, usable outdoor areas from awkward ground.
Tree services
In leafy pockets like Gladesville, established trees respond well to careful, ongoing pruning.
Gardens on the land between two rivers
The City of Ryde occupies a broad tongue of land in Sydney's lower north, hemmed by the Parramatta River along its southern edge and the Lane Cove River to the east. That position shapes the gardens. The higher ground through the middle, around Ryde, West Ryde and Denistone, falls away on more than one side towards the water, so plenty of local blocks sit on a grade rather than a flat pad, and the way ground sheds water becomes one of the first things worth sorting out.
It also means two quite different kinds of property share the one council. There are settled, leafy suburbs with generous backyards and decades of growth, and there are the newer apartment pockets that have risen quickly around Macquarie Park and along the Parramatta River. Our landscaping work across the area starts by reading which of those a site is, then planning around the slope, the soil and how the household actually wants to use the space.
The fall to the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers
Along both rivers the land tilts towards the water, and the riverside streets feel it most. On the peninsulas that push into the Parramatta River, around Putney, Tennyson Point and the Gladesville waterfront, and over on the Lane Cove side near East Ryde, blocks often sit well above or below the road with much of the garden on a fall. Turning that slope into level lawn, a terrace or somewhere to sit with a bit of a view is one of the most common jobs on this side of the LGA.
On a graded block, levels and drainage have to be planned together, because water picks up speed running downhill and needs somewhere to go. We build retaining walls to hold soil back and cut flat terraces out of the fall, then link the levels with steps and paving so the whole garden is usable, not just the flat strip near the house. Sloping riverfront gardens around Gladesville are typical of this kind of work.

Sandstone one dig, clay the next
Ground across the City of Ryde is not one thing. The area carries a mix of sandstone and clay influences, and it is not unusual to strike sandstone or rock shelf on the higher ridges while heavier clay sits through the lower and flatter pockets. That matters before a spade goes in, because the two behave very differently. Sandstone country drains quickly and can be stubborn to excavate, while clay holds water, stays heavy after rain and sets firm as it dries out.
We work with whatever a block turns out to have rather than fighting it. On clay we open the ground up with organic matter and raise beds where water lingers, and over sandstone we build up planting depth and choose species that cope with a shallow, free draining root run. A solid layer of mulch earns its keep either way, holding moisture through the dry months and steadying the soil surface. Where a lawn is wanted, preparing the base properly before laying turf is what stops it failing on either soil.
Renewing the established gardens of Gladesville and Denistone
Away from the water, the settled heart of the area is leafy and green. In streets around Gladesville, Denistone, East Ryde and West Ryde you find older brick homes with real backyards, mature trees and gardens that were laid out a generation or more ago. Many have good bones and simply need renewal: tired beds replanted, overgrown shrubs cut back into shape and large trees brought under control where they now crowd the house or block the light.
Tree work is a regular part of it. We handle pruning and trimming to lift crowns, reduce weight over a roof and let light back into a shaded yard, keeping to sensible timing rather than cutting hard without reason. Where a tree is genuinely in the wrong spot we can arrange removal, though taking out an established tree usually needs council approval somewhere in Sydney, so it pays to confirm what applies before booking anything in. For ongoing garden care around the Ryde centre we also cover Ryde itself.
Compact gardens around Macquarie Park and the river apartments
The other half of the area's story is the gardens that come with newer homes. Around Macquarie Park and Marsfield, where the business park and university have drawn a wave of apartments, and along the Parramatta River at Meadowbank and Melrose Park, a lot of properties now come with a balcony, a compact courtyard or a shared strata garden rather than a backyard. Owners here tend to want the same thing: a green, private space that does not demand a whole weekend to keep tidy.
We plan these gardens around contained, low-maintenance planting, pots and raised beds, with paving underfoot and a section of screening where it helps. Upkeep is mostly weeding, feeding and a tidy rather than mowing, and getting green waste out of an apartment complex can be awkward, so we fold green waste removal into the visit. Access and timing around a strata building take a bit of planning, which we settle before starting.
Low-maintenance planting for busy Ryde households
Whether a property is an established block or a newer townhouse, the request we hear most across Ryde is for a garden that looks after itself. Households here are often time-poor, so the aim is usually a space that stays presentable with a light touch rather than one that needs constant attention. That points towards hardy, well chosen planting, generous mulched beds and lawns sized to suit the block instead of sprawling areas that become a chore.
