Reclaimed bay land sits low, drains slow and tastes of salt

Much of Bayside, from Brighton-Le-Sands and Rockdale across to Botany and Mascot, sits on flat, low, sandy ground close to Botany Bay. The water table is high, so blocks can stay damp and lawns can sour in wet spells, while the sandy soil elsewhere drains almost too fast. Salt air off the bay burns tender plants, and the flat aspect gives little natural shelter.

We plan Bayside gardens around exactly that: raising and draining the low, wet corners, improving thin sandy soil so it holds something, and leading with salt tolerant planting. Tiled, low-water courtyards suit a lot of local homes too, and we build plenty of them.

I had to completely refurbish my apartment veranda. A lot of work repotting 15 huge troughs and pots and I was quite particular about the soil I wanted. This is five star gardening for sure! I was desperate for a good gardener as my garden had several bush stumps to remove! No one wanted the job, it was too hard others said. Terry and his team have just completed work for me and I am extremely pleased with the result. It involved the redesign design of an unusually shaped large area which had to be leveled. Old pavers had to be taken up and relaid, new gardens and a clothes line area established and turf laid. All this had to be done with curved lines. Everyday planting, turf and small paving usually do not, but larger walls, big paved areas and anything affecting drainage or the foreshore can. Check current rules with Bayside Council before major work, or ask us and we will guide you.

Usually yes. The high water table near Botany Bay keeps a lot of blocks damp. We raise beds, regrade the ground and install drainage and paving falls so water moves away and low corners finally dry out. Sydney Water’s guidance on drainage and the water table explains local stormwater.
