Landscaping Parramatta
Parramatta is two garden worlds in one council: compact courtyards near the CBD and larger established gardens in the surrounding suburbs. We work across both, from the apartments near the centre out to Northmead, Winston Hills, Epping and Carlingford.

Landscaping & design
Near the CBD, apartment courtyards need compact designs while established suburbs suit full garden makeovers.
Gardening & maintenance
Balcony planting near the centre and mature suburban beds both keep Parramatta households green.
Paving & retaining walls
From compact apartment courtyards to broad suburban patios, paving works hard across Parramatta.
Tree services
Out in the established suburbs, big mature trees need regular pruning to stay safe and shapely.
Two kinds of garden in Sydney's central city
Parramatta is unusual among Sydney councils because it holds two very different kinds of garden inside the one local government area. Close to the centre, around the growing Parramatta CBD, Westmead and Harris Park, outdoor space increasingly means an apartment balcony, a townhouse courtyard or a small paved yard behind a villa. Push out a few kilometres to Northmead, Winston Hills, Epping, Carlingford and Oatlands and you are back among established houses on proper blocks, with real lawns, garden beds and mature trees. Both sit inside the same council, and both are everyday work for us.
That split shapes how we plan a landscaping project here. A compact courtyard near the river towers needs a completely different approach to a large block up on the hills, and the plants, surfaces and upkeep that suit one would be wrong for the other. Whether you are in a new apartment near the centre or a long held family home in the surrounding suburbs, our Parramatta gardeners work across the whole area rather than treating it as one type of place.
Balconies, courtyards and townhouse yards near the CBD
Close to the Parramatta CBD the pattern is smaller, harder working spaces. Newer apartment blocks along the river and around precincts like Wentworth Point, Newington and the edge of Sydney Olympic Park come with balconies and shared courtyards, while the townhouses and villas through Harris Park and Westmead usually have a compact paved yard rather than a sweeping garden. The priorities here are privacy from close neighbours, a surface that stays usable all year, and planting that looks good without much fuss.
For these tight spaces we lean on good paving to set the floor, clipped screening and hedge trimming to hold a green boundary without stealing room, and pots and narrow beds for colour. With little or no lawn to worry about, ongoing care is mostly weeding, feeding and the occasional tidy up. It is close quarters work, but a small Parramatta courtyard can carry a lot of green once the layout suits how the space is actually used.
Established gardens in the surrounding suburbs
Away from the centre, the northern and eastern parts of the LGA feel like a different world. Streets through Northmead, Winston Hills, Constitution Hill, Epping, Carlingford, Telopea and Dundas are lined with established homes on generous blocks, many with gardens that have been growing for decades. Here there is room for a proper lawn, layered garden beds, mature shade trees and the kind of full backyard the apartments near the centre simply do not have. A lot of our work in these suburbs is renewing tired but well loved gardens rather than starting from bare ground.
On these blocks a real lawn is worth having, so hard wearing warm season turf that copes with summer heat and family use makes sense. Mature trees are one of the best features of the older streets, and keeping them healthy is usually a matter of sensible pruning rather than removal. Our Winston Hills gardeners cover exactly these kinds of established, treed gardens, and it is much the same across Carlingford, Epping and Oatlands.
Clay, the river flats and sloping ground
The land itself changes across Parramatta. Down near the Parramatta River, through Rydalmere, Ermington, Camellia, Rosehill, Clyde and Silverwater, the ground tends to be flat and low lying, so where water goes after heavy rain matters and getting the falls right is often half the job. Up on the higher ground at Winston Hills, Northmead, Constitution Hill and parts of Oatlands, blocks can slope enough that levels and terracing come into play. Underneath much of it is clay, which is common across this part of Sydney and is slow to drain when it sits wet.
We deal with the flat, heavy ground by shaping beds and levels so water moves away from the house, and by topping beds with mulch to hold moisture through the dry months without waterlogging the roots. On the sloping blocks, low retaining walls turn an awkward fall into usable terraces and keep soil where it belongs. Down on the river flats, our Ermington gardeners deal with the same flat, clay influenced ground day to day.
Mature trees, garden renewal and clearing the waste
Renewing an established Parramatta garden usually means dealing with what has grown up over the years. Older blocks through Epping, Carlingford, Oatlands and Dundas often carry large, mature trees, sometimes a generous shade tree that has outgrown its spot or a row of overgrown boundary shrubs. Careful pruning keeps most of them healthy and in shape, but when a tree is unsafe, dead or badly placed, that is when tree lopping and removal become the sensible option.
Any real clear out, whether it is an overgrown suburban backyard or a courtyard being stripped back near the centre, leaves a pile of prunings, old turf and green waste. We take that away as we go with our rubbish and green waste removal, which matters as much on a tight townhouse block near the CBD, where there is nowhere to stack it, as it does on a bigger suburban job. It is the same crew across both sides of the council, from the compact yards near the centre out to the larger gardens around Wentworthville and Constitution Hill.
