The city makes its own weather, and gardens have to answer to it

In the CBD the site conditions come from the buildings, not the soil. Wind funnels between towers and hits balconies and rooftops hard. Ground-level courtyards can sit in deep shade for most of the day, while a west-facing terrace bakes in reflected heat off glass and concrete. On structures there are weight and drainage limits, and often strata rules to work within.

We design around all of that, choosing wind firm and shade tolerant plants, container and planter systems sized for the load, and irrigation that keeps pots alive when nobody is home. The result is a city garden that looks after itself far better than a random tray of plants ever could.

Gaps between towers funnel strong gusts onto balconies and rooftops. We choose wind firm plants and secure, sheltered planter layouts so nothing gets shredded.

Deep shade at ground level

Courtyards boxed in by buildings barely see the sun. We plant shade lovers that stay lush in low light rather than fighting a losing battle with sun plants.

Weight, drainage and access limits

Rooftops and podiums can only carry so much, and everything comes up by lift or stair. We work to the building’s limits with lightweight systems and careful staging.

I had to completely refurbish my apartment veranda. A lot of work repotting 15 huge troughs and pots and I was quite particular about the soil I wanted.
